“Pease Porridge Hot” is a nursery rhyme. It first appeared in Mother Goose’s Melody, a compilation by John Newbery (namesake of the Newbery Medal for children’s literature) which helped make Mother Goose a household name in the U.K. and the U.S. Pease porridge, today known as pease pudding, is a savory pudding typically made from split yellow peas and served with ham or bacon. It is commonly eaten in the northeast of England. The classic 1959 comedy Some Like It Hot may get its name from “Pease Porridge Hot” (though the title directly references a line in the film).
