Hot Lips
Hot Lips is the nickname of Major Margaret J. Houlihan, a character in the novel, film, and TV series M*A*S*H. Hot Lips is the head nurse who has a relationship with the main antagonist, Frank Burns (first played by Robert Duvall in the movie and then by Larry Linville in the later TV series). The character was said to be inspired by real-life Korean War MASH head nurses Hotlips Hammerly and Janie Hall. In the film (directed by Robert Altman), she gets the nickname when a hidden PA microphone broadcasts her saying to Burns “kiss my hot lips” (the origin of the name is not explained in the TV series). She was played on the big screen by Sally Kellerman (the only actor in the large ensemble cast to be nominated for an Oscar for the movie). She was played on TV by Loretta Swit, who was Emmy-nominated for ten straight years from 1974 to 1983, winning twice for the role. Hot Lips was also the nickname of trumpeter Oran Page, an accompanist to “Empress of the Blues” Bessie Smith.
