Hi everyone! It’s the last day of Season 22. Thanks so much for reading and playing this season and for telling your people about us!

Old Bay

Old Bay is a seasoning blend introduced in Baltimore, Maryland in 1939. Originally called “Delicious Brand Shrimp and Crab Seasoning,” its current name came from the Old Bay Line steamboats that traveled the Chesapeake Bay in the early 1900s. Ubiquitous in the Chesapeake Bay region but also well known across the country, Old Bay is most associated with seafood, but is also commonly used to season various other foods (french fries, for example). Key components of the secret mix of 18 herbs and spices include celery salt, paprika, and mustard seed. The rights to Old Bay were purchased by leading spice company McCormick in 1990, but they have kept the same recipe and yellow and blue packaging (other than switching from metal cans to plastic containers in 2017). Herr’s, a brand of potato chips that I only knew about from its appearance in an episode of The Office, makes chips flavored with Old Bay.
