A Little Night Music

Isn’t it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground, you in mid-air…

A Little Night Music is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It was inspired by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night. The title is a translation of Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the nickname of Mozart’s Serenade No. 13 in G major. The musical includes the popular song ā€œSend in the Clownsā€ (opening lines quoted above), performed originally by Glynis Johns, by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1977 movie, and by Hannah Waddingham and Catherine Zeta-Jones in recent revivals. The song was also famously recorded by Frank Sinatra and Judy Collins, whose version became a major pop charts hit and won the Grammy for Song of the Year.
