Season 26, Day 7 - "Seven Grooms for..."
It's "Gulf" week, and today's quiz is inspired by Gulf Oil.
Gulf Oil
Gulf Oil was a major oil company that existed until 1985, when it merged with Standard Oil of California to form Chevron. The merger, at that point the largest in U.S. history, was forced by Texas oilman and corporate raider T. Boone Pickens. Gulf Oil was founded by the Mellon family of Pittsburgh after the 1901 discovery of oil in Texas (Texaco, now also part of Chevron, sprung up there around the same time). The company’s former Pittsburgh headquarters, the Gulf Tower, was the tallest building in the city until it was surpassed by the U.S. Steel Tower. In the early 20th century, Gulf introduced the first drive-in service station and became the first to give away complimentary road maps to travelers. One of the original top ten companies on the first Fortune 500 (published in 1955), Gulf Oil was part of a group of oil companies known as the Seven Sisters.
