Real Genius
Real Genius is a 1985 sci-fi comedy starring Val Kilmer. Directed by Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl) and produced by Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind), it’s about two genius students at a top engineering university who team up to develop a high-powered laser. When they find out that a professor intends to turn the laser into a military weapon, they try to sabotage the project. In the climax of the film, the protagonists redirect the laser to heat up a giant bag of popcorn, which completely fills a house and causes it to burst (a 2009 episode of MythBusters unsurprisingly concluded that this would not be possible).
