Captain Hook

Captain Hook is the main antagonist of the 1904 J.M. Barrie play Peter Pan. The captain of the Jolly Roger, he is often accompanied by his first mate, Smee. An iron hook replaced his hand after it was severed by Peter Pan. Hook’s hand was fed to a crocodile that had also swallowed a clock, resulting in a ticking sound that warned him of the croc’s presence. For this reason, crocodiles are one of Hook’s primary fears, along with the sight of his own blood, which is described as thick and of an unusual color. Though Hook dies in the original play, throwing himself overboard into the jaws of the crocodile, Walt Disney insisted on keeping him alive in the movie because “the audience will get to liking Hook.” Captain Hook was first played by Gerald du Maurier (author Daphne du Maurier’s father) in a 1904 stage production. Cyril Ritchard won a Tony for playing Hook in the 1954 Peter Pan musical. Hans Conried, also the voice of Snidely Whiplash from the Dudley Do-Right cartoons, voiced Hook in the 1953 Disney animated film. Dustin Hoffman portrayed Captain Hook in the 1991 Steven Spielberg movie Hook. Captain Hook was also a character in the 2010s ABC series Once Upon a Time, played by Colin O’Donoghue.
