Blackstrap
Blackstrap is a dark, viscous variety of molasses, a byproduct of the refining of sugarcane. Less sweet but containing more nutrients than other grades of molasses, it’s what remains after the third and final boiling in the sugar extraction process. Blackstrap molasses is used to make livestock feed. “Blackstrap” is military slang for coffee. Blackstrap is the name of a provincial park in Saskatchewan, Canada. “Black Strap Molasses” was the title of a 1951 novelty song recorded by movie stars Groucho Marx, Jimmy Durante, Jane Wyman, and Danny Kaye. Blackstrap is also the name of a company that sells outdoor gear for adventure enthusiasts.
