Season 28, Day 13 - "This Should Go Down Smooth"
It's "Black" week, and today's quiz is inspired by Black Velvet.
Black Velvet
“Black Velvet” was a song recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Alannah Myles. Released in 1989, it became a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. It earned Myles the Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and the Juno (Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys) for Single of the Year. The song is an ode to Elvis Presley; though the lyrics never mention the King by name, there are references to Memphis and the song “Love Me Tender”. The song’s title may be inspired by velvet paintings of Elvis, along with his “smooth southern style” (as described by the chorus). Reaching a height of popularity in the 1970s, velvet paintings (typically done on black velvet canvasses and often depicting Elvis) are a classic example of kitsch. “Black velvet” is also the name of a cocktail consisting of equal parts champagne and stout beer (such as Guinness). “Black Velvet” is also a brand of Canadian whisky.
