Black Swan

Black Swan is a 2010 psychological thriller movie starring Natalie Portman. It was directed by Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream) and features Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Vincent Cassel (Ocean’s Twelve, Oceans Thirteen), Barbara Hershey (Beaches), and Winona Ryder (Mermaids) in supporting roles. Natalie Portman won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Nina, a ballerina in a production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake who descends into madness. Aronofsky has cited Dostoyevsky’s novel The Double as an inspiration for the film. The Black Swan pas de deux between Prince Siegfried and Odile (the black swan) is one of the best known dances from Swan Lake. “Black swan” is also a term for something impossibly rare, coined before the discovery of black swans in Australia (when it was thought they didn’t exist). The Black Swan is also the title of a book by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, in which he describes a “black swan event” as a highly improbable event with far-reaching consequences that’s extremely difficult to predict, but seems inevitable in hindsight. The Black Swan is also a swashbuckler movie starring Tyrone Power (Witness for the Prosecution) and Maureen O’Hara (Miracle on 34th Street).
