Riot Act

The Riot Act was an act passed by the Parliament of Great Britain in 1714. Introduced to deal with noisy protests, the act’s full title was "An Act for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies, and for the more speedy and effectual punishing the rioters." It was repealed by the Criminal Law Act 1967. The Riot Act is the source of the phrase “read the riot act,” meaning to scold or reprimand someone.
