“Locksley Hall”

“In the spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love”

“Locksley Hall” is a poem by British poet laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Written in trochaic meter, it was published as part of Tennyson’s 1842 collection Poems. The speaker revisits his childhood home (the titular mansion), where he once fell in love with his cousin Amy, who rejected him due to her parents’ wishes that she marry a wealthier suitor. The fictional Locksley Hall may have been inspired by a real mansion named Loxley Hall where Tennyson was a frequent guest. In 1886, Tennyson wrote a sequel titled “Locksley Hall Sixty Years After.”
