Season 29, Day 8 - "Immigration Nation"
It's Mother week, and today's quiz is inspired by Mother Cabrini.
Mother Cabrini
Mother Cabrini (a.k.a. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini) was an Italian-American Roman Catholic nun. She took her vows in 1877, changing her name in honor of St. Francis Xavier, the Spanish Jesuit missionary known as the “Apostle of the Indies.” After founding the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1880, she planned to start a convent in China, but instead came to the U.S. after Pope Leo XIII told her to “go west, not east.” Much of Mother Cabrini’s work focused on her fellow Italian immigrants, who were often discriminated against due to the anti-Italian and anti-immigrant sentiments of the time. Revered as the patron saint of immigrants, she became the first U.S. citizen to be made a saint by the Catholic Church when she was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1946. In 2020, a holiday named for Mother Cabrini (replacing Columbus Day) was established by Governor Jared Polis in the state of Colorado, where she once founded a home for orphans.
