The Blue Boy
An homage to Anthony van Dyck, The Blue Boy is the best known work of prolific English portrait painter Thomas Gainsborough. Long thought to be an image of the original owner, Jonathan Buttall, some art historians now think it may be a portrait of Gainsborough's nephew. The Blue Boy became quite famous in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Grosvenor family, new owners of the piece, allowed visitors in their home to see it, and it was lent out to many important exhibitions, such as the Great London Exposition of 1862. So when the Grosvenors sold the piece to American railroad magnate Henry Huntington in 1921, it was seen as a sad cultural loss for England. According to Britannica, it was sold for about $700,000, making it the world's second most expensive painting at the time. It is part of the Huntington Library collection to this day, though it's currently on loan to the National Gallery in London. The Blue Boy has been referenced in numerous works of stage and screen, and even other paintings. Shirley Temple appeared in a Blue Boy costume in the movie Curly Top, Django's wardrobe in Tarantino's Django Unchained was reportedly inspired by The Blue Boy, and Kehinde Wiley's Portrait of a Young Gentleman is in the style of Blue Boy.
