“Sweet Caroline”

“Hands… touchin’ hands… reachin’ out... touchin’ me, touchin’ you…”

“Sweet Caroline (Good Times Never Seemed So Good)” is a song by American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond. Diamond has said that the title refers to Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy. A picture of young Caroline on a horse (shown above) reportedly inspired the Brooklyn-born musician to write the song. Diamond stated in a 2014 interview that the lyrics were written with his then-wife Marcia in mind, but the name Caroline sounded better. “Sweet Caroline” is commonly played and sung at sporting events across the world; entire stadiums can be heard repeating the familiar “Bum-bum-bum” and the line “So good, so good, so good!” In the U.S., it is associated with the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park, where it has been played in the middle of the eighth inning at every game since 2002. The Carolina Panthers, Iowa State University and the University of Pittsburgh use “Sweet Caroline” as a victory song. Heavyweight world champion boxer Tyson Fury has sung it in the ring and even released a cover version for charity. “Sweet Caroline” is also quite popular with football fans across the pond: Reading FC, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and the national teams of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have all used “Sweet Caroline” as an anthem.
