Season 8, Day 5 - "How's the Weather Up There?" (UNLOCKED)
It's national park week, and today's quiz is inspired by Redwood National Park.
[This is a duplicate sample newsletter, league members please disregard!]
Hey everyone! With the Week 1 deadline approaching, I'm putting out a last call in case anyone wants to get in (you can join the league at any time, but if you get this week's quizzes in by Monday, you'll be caught up and fully competitive in Season 8.)
Here's my quick pitch: according to the metrics, 96% of new signups have come back for the next month. So I think it's fair to say that if you've been thinking about joining, you probably won't regret taking the plunge. Either way, thanks for checking out the league and please enjoy Friday's quiz newsletter!

Redwood National Park
Located in the northwestern corner of California, Redwood National Park preserves old growth forests of the tallest trees in the world. The park stretches along the coast of California from Crescent City (where the park's headquarters is located) to the town of Orick. The two most dominant trees found in the park are the Douglas fir and the coast redwood, or sequoia sempervirens ("sempervirens" is Latin for evergreen). The coast redwood (world's tallest) is not to be confused with Sequoia National Park's giant sequoias (a.k.a. Sierra redwoods), the world's largest trees (by volume). The world's tallest living tree, named Hyperion (about 1.25 times taller than the Statue of Liberty), has been in the news recently with the park's announcement that visiting the famous redwood could result in a $5,000 fine and possible jail time. Even though Hyperion is off-trail and reaching it requires bushwhacking through dense vegetation, many have not been deterred, leading to damage to the tree's surrounding area. (The roots of redwoods are shallower than other trees, so it's easier for hikers to impact the soil.) The north coast of California has been called the Redwood Empire, there's a Redwood City in the Bay Area, and the Silicon Valley city of Palo Alto (Spanish for "tall stick") is named for a coast redwood. One of the largest privately owned redwood groves can be found at what is perhaps a surprising location: L.A.'s Playboy Mansion, the former home of Hugh Hefner.
